How we calculated this
DFU (Drainage Fixture Units) is a standardized measure of drain loading developed by plumbing engineers. Each fixture contributes a specific DFU value reflecting typical discharge rate and volume: water closets (toilets) 4 DFU, bathroom sinks 1 DFU, kitchen sinks 2 DFU, showers 2 DFU, tubs 2 DFU, washers 3 DFU, dishwashers 2 DFU. The calculator uses averages for private residential use per IPC 2021 Table 709.1.
Total DFU on a branch determines the minimum pipe size per IPC Table 710.1. Horizontal branches at standard 1/4" per foot slope: 1.5" handles 3 DFU, 2" handles 6 DFU, 3" handles 20 DFU, 4" handles 160 DFU. Vertical stacks have different ratings because gravity assists flow: they handle more DFU at the same diameter.
Building drains (the pipe from the building to the sewer or septic tank) follow their own table because they handle longer runs with less vertical assist. A 3" building drain handles up to 42 DFU, enough for a 2-bathroom house. A 4" drain handles up to 216 DFU: typical for larger homes or commercial buildings.
A critical rule: any pipe carrying toilet waste must be at least 3 inches in diameter. This is not DFU-based: it's a fixed requirement because toilet waste physically requires the larger pipe to prevent clogging. The calculator applies this automatically when toilets are present.
This calculator estimates pipe size for typical residential bathroom and kitchen branches. Real plumbing design also considers: vent sizing (vents are typically 1.5" or 2"), trap arm length limits (distance from trap to vent), fixture unit offsets and changes in direction, horizontal vs vertical transitions, and local code variations. A proper plumbing design follows IPC or UPC with cross-checks for all these factors.
Not captured: combined building sewer sizing (includes gray water), cleanout locations, slope requirements (1/4" per foot for 4" pipe, 1/8" per foot for 4"+ pipe), vent requirements, or hydraulic calculations for pressurized systems. For rough-in planning this tool is useful; for permit-ready plans, hire a licensed plumber.

Plumbing codes solved drain sizing decades ago with a system so plain it feels like cheating: every fixture gets a rating in drainage fixture units, you add up the ratings on a line, and a table tells you the pipe size. A toilet is 3 or 4 DFU depending on flush volume. A kitchen sink is 2. A shower is 2. A washing machine standpipe is 2 to 3. There is no judgment call in it, which is exactly the point: the inspector reads the same table you do.
The calculator above does the addition and the table lookup for you. What it cannot do is stop the two mistakes that generate most drain problems: sizing a pipe by what fits the hole instead of what the table says, and getting the slope wrong. DFU ratings follow IPC 2021 Table 709.1; pipe capacities follow Tables 710.1(1) and 710.1(2). The UPC uses slightly different numbers for some fixtures, and local amendments override both. This calculator applies the IPC values, which most US states adopt. Confirm your jurisdiction before cutting pipe.

Drainage fixture unit values per IPC 2021 Table 709.1. Trap size is the minimum; you can run a larger trap arm, never a smaller one.
Two readings of that table matter more than the rest. A full bathroom group counts as 5 DFU, not the 6 you get adding the fixtures individually, because the code assumes they are never all draining at once. And the washing machine earns a 2 inch standpipe as a hard minimum: a modern washer pumps out faster than a 1-1/2 inch line can swallow, and the overflow ends up on the laundry room floor.

The rule that trips people up sits underneath the table: any line carrying a toilet must be 3 inch minimum regardless of its DFU total. A powder room with a toilet and a lav adds up to only 4 DFU, which a 2 inch pipe could theoretically carry. It still gets a 3 inch line, because solids need the diameter, not just the capacity.
Slope: why more is not better
Code minimum is 1/4 inch of fall per foot of horizontal run for pipe 2-1/2 inches and smaller, and 1/8 inch per foot is permitted at 3 inches and up. The part almost nobody believes until they see a camera inspection: a drain sloped much steeper than about 1/2 inch per foot clogs more, not less. Water accelerates ahead of the solids and leaves them stranded in a drying pipe. If a run needs to lose a lot of elevation, the clean solution is a 45 degree drop with proper fittings, not a long ramp.
Do the drop arithmetic before opening anything. Drop equals run in feet times slope. A 12 foot branch at 1/4 inch per foot needs 3 inches, which fits inside a joist bay. A 30 foot run needs 7-1/2 inches, which probably does not, and you want to know that while the drywall is still on the wall.
A basement bathroom rough-in: one toilet (1.28 gpf, so 3 DFU), one lavatory (1 DFU), one shower (2 DFU), plus a laundry standpipe (2 DFU) joining the same horizontal branch on its way to the stack. Total: 8 DFU.
Eight DFU fits in a 2 inch branch on capacity, but the toilet forces the line to 3 inch, which then carries the whole 8 DFU with room for 20. The branch runs 16 feet to the stack: at 1/4 inch per foot that is a 4 inch drop, set with a laser level before cementing a single joint. The shower keeps its own 2 inch trap arm, the standpipe gets its 2 inch minimum, and the inspector reads the same two tables printed above and signs off in ten minutes.

Where drain sizing goes wrong
Oversizing on purpose. The instinct says a bigger pipe drains better. Below roughly half-full, a drain line depends on the water depth to float solids along, and a 4 inch pipe carrying one bathroom runs so shallow that paper strands and dries. Size to the table, not above it. The code maximums exist to keep pipes self-scouring, and this is the single most common mistake in DIY drain work.
The flat spot in the middle. A run that averages 1/4 inch per foot but sags level for three feet in the middle clogs at the sag, every time. Strap horizontal pipe every 4 feet for PVC and check the whole run with a level, not just the two ends.
Forgetting the vent. DFU tables assume every trap is vented. An unvented or poorly vented line siphons traps dry, which is what that gurgle after the toilet flushes is telling you. Vent sizing is its own table in Chapter 9 of the IPC; if the drain math above changed your pipe sizes, the vent sizes likely move with them.
Mixing code books mid-project. The IPC and UPC disagree on some DFU values and some sizing limits. Neither is wrong; they are different documents. Pick the one your jurisdiction adopted and stay in it, because an inspector will not average two tables for you.

Drain sizing usually happens alongside the rest of a bathroom or basement build. What size drain pipe do I need for a bathroom?
Standard full bathroom (toilet + sink + shower) = 8 DFU total. For a horizontal branch: 3" pipe required (toilet rule). Without a toilet, 2" pipe handles up to 6 DFU. For a half bath (toilet + sink) alone: still 3" minimum because of the toilet. Use the calculator above for exact DFU totals.
Why does a toilet always need 3-inch pipe?
Solid waste. A 1.5" or 2" pipe physically can't reliably pass a toilet discharge without clogging, the waste simply doesn't fit, regardless of slope or flow rate. This is a fixed rule in all plumbing codes; no DFU math changes it. Some ultra-low-flow toilets advertise 2" drain compatibility, but most local codes still require 3".
What's the difference between a horizontal branch and a stack?
Horizontal branch: runs sideways across a joist bay, collecting fixtures on one floor. Limited capacity because gravity doesn't help flow much at 1/4" per foot slope. Vertical stack: runs up-down through the building, collecting fixtures on multiple floors. Higher capacity because gravity assists flow. Building drain: the main line leaving the building to the sewer or septic, handles the whole house.
How is DFU different from GPM?
DFU (drainage fixture units) is a loading unit for sizing drains: it accounts for fixture use frequency and typical volume. GPM (gallons per minute) is a flow rate measurement for supply piping. They're related but different: a toilet is 4 DFU for drain sizing, but when flushing actually delivers 3-4 GPM for a few seconds. DFU is the design standard for drain pipes.
What about kitchen sinks with garbage disposals?
Standard residential kitchen sink: 2 DFU. Adding a disposal doesn't change the DFU. The 2" drain that's standard for kitchen sinks handles both a sink and a disposal fine. Where things get tight: double-bowl sinks with two disposals and a dishwasher, still under 4 DFU, still 2" pipe, but tight. Most plumbers run 2" for kitchens regardless.
Do floor drains count as DFU?
Yes, depending on use. Basement laundry floor drain: 2 DFU. Garage floor drain: 3 DFU (because it drains larger volumes and may include sediment). Bathroom floor drain: 1 DFU. The calculator doesn't have a floor drain input, if you have one, add it as a shower (2 DFU) for a close approximation.
What's the slope requirement for drain pipes?
Standard for 4" and smaller: 1/4" per foot (2%). For 6" and larger: 1/8" per foot (1%). Too steep (over 1/2" per foot) causes water to run ahead of solids, leaving solids behind. Too shallow causes solids to settle. Both lead to clogs. Always aim for the code minimum, never exceed it significantly.
Do I need a permit?
Yes: virtually all plumbing work requires permits and inspections. DIY is permitted in most jurisdictions for homeowners on their own properties, but the work must pass inspection. Plumbing permit fees typically $100-500 depending on scope. Inspectors check pipe sizing, slope, venting, cleanouts, and fixture connections. Don't skip this step: failed inspections mean tearing out walls.
